- Third-quarter adjusted EPS rose 12 percent year over year to 2.50 US dollars.
- 3M raised its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to 9.10 to 9.15 US dollars.
- Adjusted operating margin expanded to 26.2 percent as the company continued its productivity program.
3M reported stronger third-quarter profitability on October 20, 2026, and raised its full-year earnings outlook. The company said the update reflects year-to-date performance, the Madison Fire & Rescue acquisition and a change in the treatment of intangible-asset amortization in its non-GAAP reporting. The figures and guidance were published by 3M Investor Relations.
The real-time quote of 3M stock traded at 158.85 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:32 a.m. Berlin time on Friday, October 30, 2026, 0.54 percent above the Xetra close of Thursday, October 29.
Margins and guidance move higher
Third-quarter GAAP sales rose 1.0 percent year over year to 6.6 billion US dollars, while reported organic sales increased 0.2 percent. On 3M's adjusted basis, sales growth was 4.2 percent and adjusted organic growth was 3.3 percent. The distinction matters because the adjusted figures exclude manufactured PFAS products and are intended to provide a clearer view of ongoing operations.
GAAP diluted EPS increased 70 percent to 2.63 US dollars from 1.55 US dollars a year earlier. Adjusted EPS reached 2.50 US dollars, up 12 percent from 2.23 US dollars. 3M also lifted its adjusted operating margin to 26.2 percent from 25.1 percent, while the GAAP operating margin rose to 23.7 percent from 22.2 percent.
The company said it now expects adjusted total sales growth above 4.5 percent for 2026, including adjusted organic sales growth above 3.5 percent. Adjusted EPS is projected at 9.10 to 9.15 US dollars, compared with the earlier range of 8.95 to 9.10 US dollars. 3M also targets adjusted operating cash flow of roughly 5.9 billion US dollars and adjusted free cash flow of roughly 4.8 billion US dollars.
Chief Executive William Brown attributed the outlook to productivity improvements, structural transformation and a stronger pipeline of differentiated technologies. Management also pointed to solid sales growth, continued margin expansion and what it described as robust free cash flow. The updated non-GAAP basis treats intangible-asset amortization as a special item in all periods presented; 3M said the change increased the base third-quarter adjusted margin by about 40 basis points and adjusted EPS by about 0.04 US dollars, without materially affecting year-over-year comparisons.
What the outlook means for shareholders
The results strengthen the earnings case for 3M by combining higher adjusted profitability with a raised full-year target. At the same time, reported organic sales growth remained modest, leaving execution in industrial markets and the delivery of productivity gains central to the investment case. Cash generation and shareholder returns remain additional indicators for investors as the company manages litigation, portfolio changes and investment in growth areas.
