- Alibaba Cloud opened its first Netherlands public cloud region in Amsterdam on October 29.
- Two data centres support local processing, lower latency and European data residency.
- The Netherlands is Alibaba Cloud's fourth European region after Germany, the United Kingdom and France.
Alibaba Cloud opened its first public cloud region in the Netherlands on October 29, adding two data centres in Amsterdam as European companies increase spending on cloud computing and artificial intelligence. The launch was announced at the International Apsara Conference in Amsterdam and gives Alibaba Cloud a fourth European region alongside Frankfurt, London and Paris.
The expansion strengthens Alibaba's local infrastructure footprint at a time when customers are seeking lower latency and in-region processing. Alibaba Cloud said the Amsterdam region is designed to support data storage and processing in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe, while also improving resilience and disaster recovery.
Local capacity supports AI workloads
The new region offers elastic computing, storage, container, networking, big data, security, database and cloud-native services. Alibaba Cloud also plans to bring agentic AI services to Amsterdam, including tools for agent security, operational management and enterprise AI development.
Dr. Feifei Li, Alibaba Cloud's chief technology officer and president of international business, said the Dutch launch responds to demand from local companies building and scaling with AI. The company is positioning regional infrastructure as a way for customers to combine performance, security and control over where data and workloads are handled.
Alibaba Cloud said its global network now spans 109 availability zones across 32 regions. The Netherlands launch forms part of Alibaba's previously announced 53 billion US dollar investment in AI and cloud infrastructure. The company also plans a first cloud region in Finland and further data centre expansion in Germany and France over the next 12 months.
The launch creates additional capacity for Alibaba Cloud in a competitive European market, but the announcement does not quantify expected revenue or profitability from the Dutch region. For Alibaba Group, the strategic benefit lies in making Qwen models and other cloud services easier to deploy for customers that require European data localisation.
