Cloud momentum raises the stakes
Amazon.com reported its third-quarter results on Thursday, October 29. The company said AWS sales increased 39.3 percent year over year to 46.0 billion US dollars, the fastest growth rate in nearly five years, while AWS operating income reached 17.8 billion US dollars.
Amazon's official third-quarter results release said group operating income rose to 28.1 billion US dollars and the operating margin reached 13.9 percent. Net income fell to 20.7 billion US dollars, or 1.89 US dollars per diluted share, mainly because the year-earlier period included substantial gains from Amazon's Anthropic investment.
Cash generation remains the test
The stronger operating performance comes with a heavier funding burden. Free cash flow for the twelve months ended September 30 turned into an outflow of 42.4 billion US dollars, compared with an inflow of 14.8 billion US dollars a year earlier. Amazon attributed the change primarily to higher property and equipment purchases linked to artificial intelligence investment.
Management continues to expect 2026 cash capital expenditures of approximately 220 billion US dollars. The company expects fourth-quarter sales of 240.0 billion to 247.0 billion US dollars and operating income of 28.5 billion to 33.5 billion US dollars. That forecast puts the holiday period at the center of the next test: AWS demand is strong, but investors still need evidence that new capacity can translate into durable cash returns.
