- Net income rose 14 percent year on year and exceeded the analyst consensus.
- Equity and prime services revenue jumped 50 percent, supporting the investment bank.
- BNP Paribas plans to start a 1.3 billion euro share buyback in November.
BNP Paribas reported a stronger-than-expected third quarter on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, and announced a new share buyback for November. Reuters said net income rose 14 percent year on year to 3.46 billion euros, ahead of the 3.23 billion euro analyst consensus cited by the bank.
Revenue increased 9.5 percent to 13.76 billion euros from 12.57 billion euros a year earlier. The result gives investors a fresh indication that BNP Paribas is still benefiting from resilient client activity even as higher government bond yields keep pressure on the European banking sector.
Investment banking leads growth
Corporate and institutional banking was the main contributor to the quarter. Revenue in the division rose 17 percent year on year, while equity and prime services revenue surged 50 percent for a second consecutive quarter of record growth. Fixed-income, currencies and commodities trading revenue was flat, reflecting weaker conditions across fixed-income markets.
Retail banking also contributed to the improvement, with income up 4 percent as higher interest rates supported the business. Reuters reported that BNP Paribas was playing down concerns about its exposure to French government debt, putting its French sovereign bond exposure at roughly 19 billion euros at the end of September and saying France represented less than 10 percent of pre-tax income in the previous year.
Buyback starts in November
BNP Paribas said it would launch a 1.3 billion euro share buyback in November after reaching its Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio target at the end of June, ahead of schedule. The programme has received authorization from the European Central Bank, according to the results coverage. The earlier achievement of the capital target gives the bank greater flexibility to return capital to shareholders while maintaining a financial cushion.
For investors, the combination of earnings above consensus and the planned repurchase shifts attention to capital allocation as well as operating momentum. The investment bank remains the clearest growth driver in the reported quarter, but the outlook remains exposed to trading conditions, interest-rate developments and the fiscal debate in France.
