BNY Mellon expanded its Digital Asset Custody platform to selected institutions in the European Union under the Markets in Crypto-Assets framework on October 8, 2026. The bank said in its BNY announcement that the expansion makes it one of the first global systemically important banks to offer regulated digital-asset custody in the region.

European access gains regulatory footing

The rollout follows the addition of The Bank of New York Mellon SA/NV, BNY's European banking entity, to the European Securities and Markets Authority MiCA register in July 2026. That registration enables custody, administration and transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients in the European Union.

The platform, launched in 2022, uses multiparty computation technology, segregated client wallets and private-key storage. BNY said the service can provide regulated access to Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and USD Coin, with ambitions to support a broader range of crypto-assets and stablecoins.

Custody model supports institutional workflows

BNY's European expansion places its traditional asset-servicing capabilities alongside regulated digital-asset services. The bank said the platform is designed to support digital cash, tokenized assets, payments, settlement and collateral mobility as institutional adoption develops.

For investors, the key near-term issue is execution: attracting eligible European clients and connecting the custody offering with existing financial-market workflows. The announcement expands the addressable service perimeter, while commercial adoption remains the next operating milestone.
