BP's third-quarter results have strengthened the case for balance-sheet repair while leaving investors focused on whether improved energy-market earnings can persist. The company reported the figures on Friday, October 30, and will present its next strategy and capital framework update on December 15, 2026.
BP reported underlying replacement cost profit of 8.458 billion US dollars for the July-to-September quarter, compared with 5.732 billion US dollars in the second quarter and 2.210 billion US dollars a year earlier. The company attributed the sequential improvement mainly to higher realized refining margins and stronger gas marketing and trading.
Cash generation cuts net debt
Operating cash flow reached 14.829 billion US dollars, up from 10.858 billion US dollars in the previous quarter. BP said the figure included a 0.5 billion US dollar working-capital release after adjustments for inventory holding gains, fair-value accounting effects and other items.
Net debt fell to 13.870 billion US dollars at the end of September from 22.251 billion US dollars three months earlier. BP said the 8.4 billion US dollar reduction reflected stronger cash generation, partly offset by the redemption of 1.0 billion US dollars of perpetual hybrid securities.
The reported profit attributable to BP shareholders was 4.696 billion US dollars, compared with 3.911 billion US dollars in the second quarter and 1.161 billion US dollars in the third quarter of 2025. BP also recorded 4.0 billion US dollars of net impairments, linked largely to transition businesses. That distinction matters for investors because the reported result and the underlying measure point to different effects from inventory movements and adjusting items.
Operations improve across key businesses
Upstream production remained near 2.2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. Upstream plant reliability improved to 95.3 percent from 92.4 percent in the second quarter, while refining availability rose to 96.5 percent from 94.7 percent. Refinery throughput declined to 1.396 million barrels per day from 1.467 million barrels, reflecting the divestment of the Gelsenkirchen refinery.
Management said the company is simplifying its portfolio and directing excess cash toward the balance sheet. BP expects the Castrol transaction to close imminently and said the disposal could unlock 6 billion US dollars for further balance-sheet strengthening. It also agreed to accelerate delivery of its Deepwater Horizon settlement commitments and intends to prioritize remaining liabilities.
December update becomes the next test
BP's next major investor milestone is the December 15 strategy update in New York. The company plans to outline longer-term plans, a capital framework, performance metrics and targets for a simpler, stronger and more valuable business. The presentation will give investors a clearer basis for judging whether current cash generation can support debt reduction, disciplined investment and shareholder distributions through changing commodity conditions.
