Demand Meets Capacity Execution

  • Caterpillar reported third-quarter sales and revenues of 20.7 billion US dollars, up 17 percent year over year.
  • The company cited strong order rates and a record backlog as power-generation demand from data centers accelerates.

Caterpillar's record third quarter shifted the investor focus from demand to execution. The company reported the results on October 29, while Utility Dive described the capacity response to data-center demand in a report published November 3.

According to Caterpillar's earnings release, third-quarter sales and revenues rose 17 percent year over year to 20.7 billion US dollars. Profit per share was 7.13 US dollars, while adjusted profit per share reached 7.20 US dollars after excluding restructuring costs.

Operating profit margin improved to 20.4 percent from 17.3 percent a year earlier. Caterpillar also deployed 2.0 billion US dollars for share repurchases and dividends during the quarter, including 1.2 billion US dollars of buybacks and 0.7 billion US dollars of dividends.

Power Demand Raises the Stakes

Utility Dive reported that Caterpillar's backlog reached 78 billion US dollars, nearly double the year-earlier level. The publication said the company is expanding production of large reciprocating engines and turbines to serve data-center customers.

Power and Energy sales rose 18 percent to 8.8 billion US dollars in the third quarter, with power-generation sales up 30 percent year over year. The division's growth highlights the opportunity, but capacity expansion, delivery timing and manufacturing costs remain important execution issues for investors.

Caterpillar expects moderate sales growth in the fourth quarter and higher operating profit margins. For the full year, management maintained a mid-to-high-teens sales-growth outlook and estimated tariff costs of about 2.2 billion US dollars, excluding refunds.
