Caterpillar reported stronger third-quarter results on October 29, 2026, as sales growth, profitability and shareholder distributions improved from a year earlier. In its October 29 results release, the manufacturer said sales and revenues rose 17 percent to 20.7 billion US dollars in the third quarter.
The increase reflected 2.2 billion US dollars of higher sales volume and 663 million US dollars of favorable price realization. Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Joe Creed said strong order rates and a record backlog reflected the durability of the companys end markets.
Margins and earnings strengthened
Operating profit margin increased to 20.4 percent from 17.3 percent in the third quarter of 2025. On an adjusted basis, which excludes restructuring costs, the margin reached 20.6 percent compared with 17.5 percent a year earlier.
Profit per share rose to 7.13 US dollars from 4.88 US dollars. Adjusted profit per share increased to 7.20 US dollars from 4.95 US dollars. The adjusted figures exclude restructuring costs in both comparison periods, giving investors a clearer view of the underlying quarterly performance.
The results point to operating leverage as Caterpillar converted higher demand and pricing into faster profit growth. For investors, the combination of volume gains and wider margins matters because it supports cash generation while the company continues to invest across construction, mining and power equipment.
Cash returns remain substantial
Enterprise operating cash flow reached 4.4 billion US dollars during the quarter, while enterprise cash stood at 7.9 billion US dollars at quarter-end. Caterpillar deployed 1.2 billion US dollars to repurchase its shares and 0.7 billion US dollars for dividends, taking total shareholder distributions to 2.0 billion US dollars.
