- The West Qurna-2 agreement could broaden Chevron's international upstream portfolio.
- Talks also continue on Nasiriyah and four exploration blocks.
- Final contract terms will determine the project's financial significance.
Iraq and Chevron agreed key terms for a contract covering the West Qurna-2 oilfield on November 4, 2026. Oil & Gas Middle East reported the development, citing a statement from Iraq's oil ministry carried by the state Iraqi News Agency.
The formal contract is targeted for signing before the end of 2026. The agreement gives Chevron a potential expansion of its international upstream portfolio, but the project's contribution to production and earnings will depend on the final terms, investment requirements, development schedule and operating execution.
West Qurna-2 Broadens Upstream Options
Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudair Al-Abadi confirmed the agreement with Chevron. The ministry is also continuing discussions with the company on the Nasiriyah field and four additional exploration blocks, creating a broader set of possible projects in Iraq.
West Qurna-2 was previously operated by Russia's Lukoil. Chevron had signed a framework agreement with Basra Oil Company and Lukoil in February that granted one year of exclusive negotiating rights, while the Iraqi oil ministry later signed a technical consultancy agreement with Chevron during the negotiations.
