Ciena stock faces cash-flow test as profit margins widen

- Ciena's fiscal third-quarter revenue increased 37 percent year over year to 1.67 billion US dollars.
- Management expects fiscal fourth-quarter operating cash flow to decline as the company pays for long-term component agreements.
- The order backlog stood at 8.5 billion US dollars after fiscal Q3, with management expecting more than 10 billion US dollars by year-end.
Ciena's profit growth is outpacing its cash generation, according to an analysis published by Trefis on Thursday, October 29. The analysis points to stronger margins from Ciena's fiscal third quarter, while cash conversion remained broadly stable.
Ciena reported fiscal Q3 revenue of 1.67 billion US dollars for the quarter ended August 1, up 37 percent from a year earlier. Its operating margin reached 18.1 percent, compared with 6.2 percent in the prior-year quarter. Over the twelve months to August 1, the operating margin was 14.1 percent, versus 5.6 percent a year earlier.
Cash Conversion Faces A Test
Trefis said Ciena converted 13.5 percent of sales into free cash flow over the twelve months to August 1. The comparable ratio a year earlier was 13.3 percent, showing little change despite the wider operating margin. In the latest quarter, free cash flow fell to 116 million US dollars from 135 million US dollars a year earlier.
Management said on the September 3 earnings call that operating cash flow should decline in fiscal Q4. Ciena is paying for long-term agreements intended to secure key components through 2029. That makes free cash flow a central metric for the fiscal fourth-quarter report, which Trefis expects in December 2026.
Demand Supports The Growth Case
The company said demand is being driven by large investments in data-center infrastructure. Management also said roughly 50 percent of business now comes directly from hyperscale customers. Ciena ended fiscal Q3 with an 8.5 billion US dollar backlog and expects the figure to exceed 10 billion US dollars by the end of fiscal 2026.
The combination of rising revenue, higher margins and a large backlog supports the growth narrative. The cash-flow gap raises a separate execution question: whether component commitments and working-capital needs will prevent profit growth from translating into stronger cash generation.
Valuation Leaves Little Room
Trefis said Ciena traded at 78.8 times earnings at the October 28 close, compared with 22.6 times for the S&P 500. The analysis also noted that the earnings multiple had fallen from 146.7 times a year earlier, while the price-to-sales multiple had increased to 8.3 from 4.5.
