Contemporary Amperex Technology has started production at its new electric-vehicle battery plant in Karawang, Indonesia, according to Just Auto. The report was published on Thursday, November 5, 2026, ahead of the facility's planned official inauguration later this month.

New capacity in Karawang

The facility is controlled by PT Contemporary Amperex Technology Indonesia Battery, a joint venture between CATL, Indonesian mining company PT Aneka Tambang and state-backed Indonesia Battery Corporation. Construction began in June 2025.

The project represents an investment of USD 6 billion. Its first phase is designed to deliver annual production capacity of 6.9 GWh, with plans to expand to as much as 15 GWh. CATL says robots handle 80 percent of the production processes.

Local EV supply is the priority

Initial output is expected to supply Indonesia's expanding vehicle-assembly industry, which is dominated by Chinese brands. Local production can help automakers meet Indonesia's minimum local-content requirements for electric vehicles.

The Karawang facility is the third electric-vehicle battery plant to begin operations in Indonesia, following a Hyundai plant in the same area and a facility operated by REPT Battero Energy in North Maluku.
