Ericsson stock gains a new technology angle as the company launches a mobile-network system for detecting drones. Customer pilots are planned for 2027.

Ericsson expands network sensing plans

  • The Ericsson ISAC System uses sensing-capable 5G radios, edge computing, artificial intelligence and signal processing to track moving objects.
  • Selected customers are expected to begin small-scale sensing-only pilots in 2027, with broader deployments planned from 2028.
  • Trials with AT&T, Erillisverkot, Asseco and Play tested drone detection across several operating environments.

Ericsson introduced its Ericsson ISAC System on November 2, 2026, opening a new application for mobile-network infrastructure. The system adds sensing capabilities to 5G networks so operators can detect and track moving objects such as drones, including objects that are not connected to the network, according to an Ericsson press release.

The company is targeting defense, public safety and critical infrastructure operators. Ericsson said commercial introduction will begin with selected small-scale, sensing-only pilots in 2027. Broader sensing deployments are expected from 2028, while the integrated communications capability is planned to develop as the technology moves toward 6G.

Existing infrastructure supports sensing

The system analyzes reflections from radio signals and operates as a multi-static network. Transmission and reception are distributed across geographically separate mobile sites, allowing the system to view objects from multiple angles and maintain tracks across a coverage area.

Ericsson said the system uses parts of existing 5G infrastructure, including towers, backhaul and spectrum. It combines sensing-capable radios with edge computing, artificial intelligence and signal processing. The company says this approach can provide tracking data and AI-based classification through standardized interfaces with security and command systems.

Validated tests detected and tracked micro drones at kilometer-scale distances with precise 3D positioning. Ericsson cautioned that performance depends on the target, its flight profile, sensing geometry, terrain, surrounding environment and system configuration. The company presents the technology as a complement to radar and other sensors rather than a replacement.

Trials point to several use cases

Ericsson said a trial with AT&T in Arlington, Texas, detected, located and tracked multiple drones using sensing dashboards. A separate demonstration with Erillisverkot in Helsinki used multiple 5G sites to show how network sensing could support public safety and counter-drone operations.

In Poland, Ericsson worked with Asseco and Play on a demonstration combining ISAC technology, Play's mobile network and Asseco's PUSZCZYK acoustic detection system. The companies focused on improving the detection and positioning of low-flying drones near sensitive locations.

What the launch means for investors

The launch gives Ericsson a potential software and services angle around infrastructure that mobile operators already deploy. The commercial opportunity remains prospective because customer pilots are scheduled before wider deployments, and the company has not provided revenue guidance for the new system in the announcement.
