- Sweden's armed forces are preparing advanced 5G capabilities for military communications and field operations.
- Ericsson's ISAC system is designed to detect and track drones through mobile-network infrastructure.
- Selected sensing-only pilots are planned for 2027, with broader deployments expected from 2028.
Ericsson is extending its 5G growth narrative into defense and emergency communications after Sweden outlined plans for advanced military connectivity on Thursday, November 5. In a company newsroom update, Ericsson said the Swedish Armed Forces will use 5G for military capabilities and communications.
Defense network broadens the use case
The planned capability will use Telia's nationwide network, where Ericsson is the infrastructure vendor. It is intended to extend coverage at military bases, temporary field locations and emergency airbases, while supporting equipment on amphibious craft, frigates and transport aircraft.
The network is expected to complement existing military communication systems. Sweden and Finland have also been given a role in NATO's development of future military wireless communications through the NATO Innovation Range initiative.
Drone sensing targets future demand
The Swedish announcement included a demonstration of Ericsson's Integrated Sensing and Communication system. The technology uses mobile-network infrastructure to detect and track moving objects, including drones that are not connected to the network, and is positioned as a complement to radar and other sensors.
Ericsson expects selected sensing-only commercial pilots to begin in 2027, followed by broader sensing deployments from 2028. The timetable gives investors a potential path for evaluating whether the defense and public-safety opportunity develops into funded deployments, although the announcement contained no contract value or direct revenue guidance.
