Ericsson stock enters a new defense and infrastructure theme after two 5G announcements. Commercial sensing pilots are planned from 2027.

Ericsson's new technology angles

  • Ericsson introduced a 5G-based sensing system that can detect and track drones, including aircraft not connected to the mobile network.
  • Sweden's armed forces are adding 5G capabilities for military communications, field deployments and emergency airbases.
  • Small-scale commercial sensing pilots are planned for 2027, with broader deployments expected from 2028.

Ericsson added two technology angles to its investment story during the week through new 5G applications in drone detection and defense communications. The company introduced its Integrated Sensing and Communication system on November 3, while Sweden's armed forces announced expanded military use of 5G.

5G network becomes a sensor

Ericsson's ISAC system uses existing mobile-network infrastructure, radio reflections, edge computing and artificial intelligence to detect and track moving objects. The system can follow low-flying drones even when they are not connected to the network, although Ericsson says it is intended to complement rather than replace radar and other sensors.

Aviacionline reported that the system combines signals from several network sites to improve the positioning and tracking of drones. Ericsson plans selected small-scale commercial sensing pilots in 2027, followed by wider deployments from 2028.

Defense use broadens the opportunity

In Sweden, the armed forces, supported by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, are using 5G for military capabilities and communications. The network can extend coverage at military bases, support temporary field solutions and connect assets such as amphibious craft, frigates and transport aircraft.

Ericsson is the infrastructure vendor for Telia, whose nationwide network capabilities are part of the Swedish initiative. The company also demonstrated its drone-detection technology during the announcement, linking the commercial sensing opportunity with public-sector and defense applications.

Ericsson said the Swedish capability complements existing military communications. The initiative also fits Sweden and Finland's role in the NATO Innovation Range initiative for future military wireless communications.
