- Sweden's armed forces plan to use advanced 5G for military communications and field coverage.
- Ericsson links the initiative to NATO innovation work and future commercial sensing pilots.
- A proposed European emergency network could connect first responders across borders from 2030.
Ericsson is broadening its 5G growth narrative toward defense and emergency communications. In a newsroom update published on Thursday, November 5, the company said Sweden's armed forces are preparing to use advanced 5G for military capabilities and communications. The announcement came alongside industry and government discussions in Sweden on next-generation wireless networks. The Ericsson newsroom described the plan.
Defense demand meets network sensing
The Swedish Armed Forces, supported by the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration, will use the nationwide network of Telia, where Ericsson is the infrastructure vendor. The planned 5G capability is intended to extend coverage at military bases, temporary field locations and emergency airbases. It could also support communications equipment on amphibious craft, frigates and transport aircraft while complementing existing military systems.
Sweden and Finland have been given a role in NATO's development of future military wireless communications. The Swedish government has also tasked the armed forces with creating an innovation platform for next-generation networks. For Ericsson, the initiative offers a route into mission-critical connectivity, although the announcement did not disclose contract value, deployment volume or direct revenue impact.
The event also featured Ericsson's Integrated Sensing and Communication technology, which uses mobile networks to detect and track moving objects, including drones that are not connected to the network. Ericsson expects selected sensing-only commercial pilots to start in 2027, followed by broader deployments from 2028. The technology is positioned as a complement to radar and other sensors rather than a replacement.
Europe adds a longer-term opportunity
The company also pointed to a European Commission proposal for a Critical Communication System for emergency services. If adopted by the European Parliament and the European Council, member states could begin connecting gradually from 2030. The proposal would support cross-border sharing of data, video, messages and location information among police, firefighters, medical services and other responders.
