Ericsson stock gains a new growth angle as the company launches a system for detecting drones through mobile networks. Customer pilots are planned for 2027.

Ericsson expands network sensing

  • Ericsson launched an Integrated Sensing and Communication system for detecting and tracking drones and other moving objects.
  • Selected customer pilots are planned for 2027, with broader sensing deployments expected from 2028.
  • The technology could create new services for defense, public safety and critical infrastructure customers.

Ericsson introduced its Integrated Sensing and Communication System on Monday, November 2, adding drone detection to the potential uses of existing mobile-network infrastructure. The Swedish telecom equipment group said selected small-scale, sensing-only commercial pilots are expected to begin in 2027, followed by broader deployments from 2028, according to its press release.

Ericsson stock traded at 9.84 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:38 CET on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. For the latest trading indication, investors can use the real-time quote of Ericsson stock.

5G infrastructure becomes a sensor

The ISAC System analyzes reflections from radio signals to detect and track objects that are not connected to the mobile network. Ericsson said the multi-static architecture distributes signal transmission and reception across geographically separated network sites, allowing several viewpoints to improve positioning, tracking continuity and coverage resilience.

The system combines sensing-capable 5G radios with edge computing, artificial intelligence and signal processing. It can use towers, backhaul and spectrum already deployed across cities, transport corridors and strategic locations. Ericsson said the resulting tracking data and AI-based classifications can be shared through standardized interfaces with authorized security and command-and-control systems.

In validated tests, the system detected and tracked micro drones at kilometer-scale distances with precise three-dimensional positioning, while the company cautioned that performance depends on the target, flight profile, sensing geometry, terrain, surrounding environment and system configuration. Ericsson presents the technology as a complement to radar and other sensors rather than a replacement.

Commercial path starts with pilots

Ericsson cited demonstrations with AT&T in Arlington, Texas, and with Finnish critical-communications operator Erillisverkot in Helsinki. A separate demonstration in Poland combined Ericsson's network sensing with Play's mobile network and Asseco's acoustic detection technology. The use cases include defense, public safety, critical infrastructure, transport, industry and low-altitude drone management.

The initial commercial opportunity is therefore tied to operators and public-sector customers willing to add sensing capabilities to 5G infrastructure. The planned pilot phase provides a route toward revenue, but the press release does not quantify customer commitments or financial contribution. Ericsson also said integrated communications capabilities will be added as the technology evolves toward 6G.

Swedish equities are also influenced by developments in the OMXS30 market.

Investors following the rollout can monitor customer pilots, deployments and further 6G development in the coming stages. More news and analyses on Ericsson stock
