Essity faces fresh legal scrutiny in its North American feminine care business after hundreds of Los Angeles County residents sued over Carefree panty liners. The complaint, filed on October 9, 2026, in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, alleges that the products were intentionally made with perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, a chemical in the PFAS group.
Manufacturing Dive reported on October 20 that the plaintiffs accuse Essity, Edgewell and Johnson & Johnson of manufacturing and distributing Carefree products in violation of California restrictions that took effect on January 1, 2025. Gelson's Markets is also named in the case over the alleged sale of the products.
Essity rejects central allegation
The lawsuit cites an independent laboratory test from 2024 that allegedly found PFOA in one or more of five Carefree product layers. The plaintiffs further allege that the companies failed to disclose the chemical, provide warnings or offer a PFAS-free alternative. The claims include alleged consumer injuries and requests for compensatory damages.
Essity spokesperson Amy Bellcourt said Carefree stands behind its products. She said the company does not intentionally add PFAS chemicals to its products, that PFAS are not an ingredient used in making them and that the ingredients are printed on the packaging. Essity plans to respond vigorously to the claims. The allegations have not been established by a court.
Essity completed its acquisition of Edgewell's North American feminine care business on February 4, 2026. The transaction brought Carefree and other brands into Essity's portfolio, making product compliance and potential litigation costs relevant issues as the business is integrated.
Market context and next steps
For investors, the case creates a legal and reputational risk around a recently expanded business area, while the outcome will depend on Essity's response, the court's handling of the claims and evidence concerning the products at issue.
