- Grifols restarted limited plasma collection at clinics in Winnipeg and Edmonton after pausing Canadian operations in August.
- Health Canada is keeping enhanced oversight in place while the Taylor Avenue clinic in Winnipeg remains closed.
- The company says it strengthened procedures, training and operational controls before the phased reopening.
Grifols has begun a phased resumption of plasma collection in Canada after a two-month suspension, with two clinics reopening under enhanced regulatory oversight. The move addresses a key operational issue for the Spanish healthcare group, but the regulator is keeping conditions on the wider network.
According to CBC News, Grifols announced on Tuesday, October 20, that collection activities would resume at its Innovation Drive clinic in Winnipeg and at a site on Currents Drive in Edmonton. Both locations initially operate with a reduced number of daily donor appointments, which are intended to increase progressively. Additional centres are expected to reopen in stages.
Regulatory conditions remain in place
Grifols halted paid plasma collection at its Canadian clinics on August 14 after Health Canada raised compliance concerns at the Taylor Avenue site in Winnipeg. That clinic's licence remains suspended. Conditions imposed on 16 other collection centres will stay in place until Health Canada is satisfied that sustained compliance has been demonstrated.
The regulator visited the Winnipeg and Edmonton sites before their reopening to assess corrective actions, staff training and operational controls. Health Canada said it will continue scheduled and unannounced inspections and will conduct readiness assessments before other locations restart. The approach leaves the pace of Grifols' Canadian recovery dependent on further regulatory reviews rather than on the company's timetable alone.
Company cites operational overhaul
Grifols said it used the suspension period to strengthen operating procedures, documentation, employee training and supervision, staffing models, quality reviews and operational oversight across its Canadian network. The company also assumed full operational control of Canadian Plasma Resources on September 1, a change that CBC said was intended to improve alignment across the business.
The reopening follows scrutiny after two people died in October 2025 and January 2026 after donating plasma at different Grifols clinics in Winnipeg. CBC reported that Health Canada had identified shortcomings in donor screening and supervision, while the regulator has not said that the donation process caused either death. Canadian Blood Services described the company's steps to strengthen its processes as prudent and effective, according to CBC.
Stock context for investors
The Realtime Kurs der Grifols stock was 10.81 euros at Lang & Schwarz on Friday, October 30, 2026, at 09:37 Berlin time.
For investors, the Canadian reopening removes a temporary operational interruption at two sites but does not yet restore the full network. The suspended Winnipeg licence and continuing conditions at the other centres keep compliance execution central to the investment case. A gradual expansion of appointments could support plasma supply and utilisation, while further inspections remain an important near-term risk factor.
