- Imperial Oil's downstream business led the quarterly profit surge despite lower upstream production.
- Refinery utilization declined as outages and planned maintenance reduced throughput.
- Shareholder returns remained substantial through dividends and share repurchases.
Imperial Oil reported a record third-quarter profit on Friday, October 30, after stronger refining margins and higher commodity prices outweighed lower production and refinery throughput. The company said downstream earnings provided the main lift in the period ended September 30.
Imperial Oil said net income reached CAD 2.454 billion, compared with CAD 539 million a year earlier. Revenue and other income rose to CAD 16.205 billion from CAD 12.049 billion. The figures come from the company's third-quarter financial and operating release.
Downstream carried the quarter
Downstream net income increased to CAD 1.555 billion from CAD 444 million in the third quarter of 2025. Imperial attributed the improvement to higher industry refining margins, higher bitumen realizations and improved market conditions.
Upstream production averaged 418,000 gross oil-equivalent barrels per day, down from 462,000 a year earlier. Refinery throughput fell to 381,000 barrels per day from 425,000, while capacity utilization declined to 88 percent from 98 percent. The company cited unplanned downtime, a third-party pipeline outage and planned turnaround work.
Cash returns remain substantial
Imperial returned CAD 2.506 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including CAD 420 million in dividends and CAD 2.086 billion in share repurchases. The company said it expects to complete the remaining allowable purchases under its accelerated normal course issuer bid before year-end.
