Indra has taken a new role in European defense technology after leading a seven-company Spanish alliance to develop SIPRIS, a system for continuous surveillance of undersea cables and critical infrastructure. The agreement was signed on Wednesday, November 4, at Euronaval 2026 in Paris, according to Second Line of Defense, which reported the development on November 5.

Seabed security joins the defense portfolio

Indra is working with SAES, UTEK, Aragon Photonics, Iqua Robotics, FYLA and Sateliot on SIPRIS. The planned system combines fiber-optic anomaly detection, sonar, uncrewed surface and underwater vehicles, aerial drones, underwater optical communications and satellite coverage.

Indra's SEADEF architecture and IndraMind artificial-intelligence platform are intended to connect the system's components. Field testing is scheduled to begin immediately. The alliance positions Indra in a growing European effort to protect critical maritime infrastructure and strengthen sovereign defense capabilities.

Execution will determine the payoff

The agreement adds a fresh strategic detail to Indra's defense expansion, but it is a development framework rather than a production contract. The pace of field testing, technical integration and subsequent customer adoption will determine whether the initiative develops into a material business opportunity.

Indra's latest nine-month update showed strong operating momentum, with revenue up 28.6 percent year on year and order backlog growth supporting visibility. Management maintained its 2026 targets for revenue above 7 billion euros, EBIT above 700 million euros and free cash flow above 375 million euros, excluding relevant defense-program prepayments.

The company is scheduled to present its new strategic plan at a Capital Markets Day in Madrid on November 25. That event should provide investors with more detail on growth priorities, capital allocation and the role of defense technology in the medium-term portfolio.
