- Infineon plans a roughly EUR 1.1 billion expansion of its Villach site for high-volume gallium nitride production.
- The European Commission approved EUR 319 million in Austrian state aid for the project.
- A new reference design targets 800-volt power architectures for artificial intelligence data centers.
Infineon Technologies is combining a large manufacturing expansion with new AI power products as it positions gallium nitride for the next phase of semiconductor demand. The company plans to invest around EUR 1.1 billion in its Villach, Austria, site by 2034.
In a press release dated October 27, 2026, Infineon said the project will establish Europe's first high-volume manufacturing facility for gallium nitride power semiconductors on 300-millimeter wafers. Production is scheduled to start by the end of 2027, while the full investment is planned through 2034.
The European Commission approved EUR 319 million in Austrian state aid under the European Chips Act. The funding supports the transition from existing 200-millimeter gallium nitride production to larger wafers, which Infineon says can produce more chips per wafer and expand manufacturing efficiency. The project is aimed at applications including artificial intelligence data centers, energy infrastructure, electric mobility and robotics.
AI power demand broadens opportunity
Infineon also introduced a high-voltage power distribution board reference design for AI server architectures during the week. The platform supports 800-volt and plus-or-minus 400-volt power distribution, with gallium nitride-based intermediate bus converter modules reaching peak efficiency of up to 98.5 percent, according to the company's technology announcement. The product is scheduled to become available in November 2026.
Infineon stock traded at 50.95 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:41 CEST on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Investors will next look to the company's fourth-quarter results, scheduled for November 10, 2026, for evidence of demand across its power and automotive semiconductor businesses.
