- Server demand supported the third quarter, while client computing weakened amid memory shortages and tighter IT budgets.
- Management expects the PC correction to continue into the first quarter as customers reduce inventory.
- The Israel Fab 28 disruption adds pressure to near-term shipments and gross margin.
Intel reported a strong server-led third quarter on October 29, but management issued a cautious outlook for the following period. The earnings call showed a widening gap between resilient data-center demand and a sharply weaker PC market.
According to the Intel earnings call transcript, third-quarter revenue reached USD 16.513 billion. Strong data-center and artificial-intelligence demand helped offset weakness in client computing, where memory shortages and limited IT budgets reduced customer purchases.
Fourth-quarter guidance resets expectations
Intel guided for fourth-quarter revenue of USD 15 billion to USD 16 billion, with a midpoint of USD 15.5 billion. The company expects non-GAAP gross margin of 38 percent and non-GAAP earnings per share of USD 0.25.
The outlook includes an estimated USD 300 million revenue impact and a 200-basis-point gross-margin effect from an incident at the Fab 28 plant in Israel. Management said the disruption primarily affects 10-nanometer server shipments. The impact is an early assessment covering the fourth quarter and the following first quarter.
PC correction remains the central risk
Management said PC customers accelerated inventory reductions as memory prices and availability pressured system costs. Client revenue is expected to decline by more than 20 percent sequentially in the fourth quarter, and the company does not expect the market to recover until memory conditions normalize.
