- The FDA granted accelerated approval for RYBREVANT FASPRO in previously treated advanced head and neck cancer.
- New Impella analyses presented at TCT highlighted outcomes in high-risk coronary procedures.
- A confirmatory Phase 3 study remains important for the cancer treatment's continued approval.
Johnson & Johnson enters the weekend with two healthcare developments across its Innovative Medicine and MedTech businesses. On Thursday, November 5, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted accelerated approval for RYBREVANT FASPRO as a single-agent treatment for adults with recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma after platinum-based chemotherapy and an anti-PD-(L)1 antibody, according to the Johnson & Johnson press release.
The approval is based on the Phase 1b/2 OrigAMI-4 study. The company reported a confirmed overall response rate of 42 percent among 102 previously treated patients, while continued approval may depend on results from the ongoing Phase 3 OrigAMI-5 trial. The indication excludes HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
MedTech evidence adds a second catalyst
On Sunday, November 1, Johnson & Johnson reported three analyses presented at the Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics symposium in San Diego. The company said real-world and registry data covering 1,379 high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention patients showed lower in-hospital, 30-day and 90-day cardiovascular mortality than results reported in the CHIP-BCIS3 study.
One analysis of 279 patients reported 30-day all-cause mortality of 6.1 percent and 180-day mortality of 7.9 percent. A separate U.S. registry analysis of 522 patients reported cardiovascular mortality of 3.4 percent at discharge, 4.7 percent at 30 days and 6.5 percent at 90 days. The figures are company-reported comparisons from observational and real-world analyses, not a new randomized trial. Johnson & Johnson said results from the PROTECT IV randomized controlled trial are expected in 2027, as described in its TCT release.
