- Nine-month profit after tax rose 46 percent year on year to 4.835 billion pounds.
- Third-quarter net interest income increased 10 percent, while deposit competition continued to pressure margins.
- Management expects 2026 net interest income above 14.9 billion pounds and return on tangible equity above 16 percent.
Lloyds Banking Group reported stronger third-quarter profitability on Thursday, October 29, but kept its full-year targets unchanged. Lloyds Banking stock traded at 1.17 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 10:04 CET on Friday, October 30, 0.85 percent below the Xetra close of Thursday, October 29.
The bank's Q3 2026 results announcement, published on October 29, showed statutory profit before tax of 2.332 billion pounds for the three months to September 30, up 99 percent from 1.174 billion pounds a year earlier. The comparison benefited from the absence of the 875 million pound remediation charge recorded in the third quarter of 2025.
Income and margins move higher
Net income rose 9 percent year on year to 5.072 billion pounds in the third quarter. Underlying net interest income reached 3.806 billion pounds, 10 percent above the prior-year quarter, while the banking net interest margin improved to 3.25 percent from 3.06 percent.
Lloyds said stronger structural hedge income and lending growth supported the quarter. Average interest-earning banking assets increased 1 percent from the second quarter to 481.0 billion pounds. The company also highlighted competitive conditions in the deposit market, which limited the pace of margin expansion and remains an important consideration for investors.
Underlying profit rose 83 percent year on year to 2.367 billion pounds. The quarterly return on tangible equity was 19.5 percent, compared with 7.5 percent a year earlier and 17.0 percent in the second quarter. The cost:income ratio improved to 47.2 percent from 68.4 percent in the prior-year quarter.
Guidance remains unchanged
For the first nine months, statutory profit after tax increased 46 percent to 4.835 billion pounds, while earnings per share rose to 7.6 pence from 4.8 pence. Underlying profit increased 36 percent to 6.582 billion pounds. Net income rose 9 percent to 14.819 billion pounds, and underlying net interest income advanced 10 percent to 11.084 billion pounds.
Lloyds reiterated its 2026 targets. The group expects underlying net interest income above 14.9 billion pounds, a cost:income ratio below 50 percent, operating costs below 9.9 billion pounds, an asset quality ratio of about 25 basis points, return on tangible equity above 16 percent and capital generation above 200 basis points. It also plans to reduce its CET1 ratio to about 13.0 percent.
Management said current conditions point to net interest income modestly above 14.9 billion pounds. That stance gives investors a firm operating target, but the lack of an upgrade leaves the share price exposed to changing expectations for deposit costs, lending growth and UK interest rates.
Capital and balance sheet
Underlying loans and advances to customers increased 1 percent from June to 495.5 billion pounds, while customer deposits rose to 502.8 billion pounds. The CET1 ratio stood at 13.3 percent at September 30, down from 13.6 percent at June 30 after distributions and other capital movements.
The group said credit performance remained strong and stable, with arrears low across its retail and commercial portfolios. The nine-month underlying impairment charge was 930 million pounds, producing an asset quality ratio of 25 basis points, in line with the full-year target.
Lloyds is also moving into its new Accelerate 2030 strategy. The company expects mid-single-digit net income compound growth from 2027 to 2030 and a cost:income ratio below 45 percent by 2030, subject to its macroeconomic assumptions. For shareholders, the immediate question remains whether income growth can continue to offset deposit competition and higher operating or credit costs.
