NextEra Energy is adding a new financing-light growth avenue to its data-center strategy. Three federally backed energy hubs with a combined capacity of 16.5 gigawatts have secured USD 5.7 billion in initial funding, while the company expects to develop, build and operate them for fees rather than commit its own project capital, Utility Dive reported on October 23.

Federal hubs broaden the pipeline

The projects span Texas and Pennsylvania and are linked to large electricity loads, including data centers. Utility Dive reported that the fee model could deliver at least half of the earnings contribution expected under direct ownership during the first 20 operating years. The structure gives NextEra Energy exposure to rising power demand while limiting the capital burden, although execution, permits and customer commitments remain material factors.

Quarterly results and outlook

NextEra Energy reported third-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings per share of USD 1.24, up from USD 1.13 a year earlier. Reuters reported that the result exceeded the analyst estimate cited by LSEG, while revenue of USD 8.09 billion fell below consensus. NextEra Energy maintained its 2026 adjusted EPS range of USD 3.92 to USD 4.02 and is targeting the high end.

Energy Resources added 3.7 gigawatts of renewable and storage projects to its backlog, which reached nearly 36.7 gigawatts. Florida Power & Light also increased regulatory capital employed by 9.2 percent year over year, according to the same Reuters report.

Merger remains under review

The proposed combination with Dominion Energy has received shareholder approval but still requires state and federal regulatory clearances. Management continues to expect closing in the second half of 2027, according to the company release dated October 21.
