Occidental Petroleum stock faces test as midstream gains fade

- Midstream earnings reached a record near USD 960 million in the second quarter as regional gas-price spreads widened.
- New Permian takeaway capacity could compress that spread, while upstream production and costs will show whether operations can offset the decline.
- Occidental is scheduled to release third-quarter results after the close on November 9 and hold its conference call on November 10.
Occidental Petroleum enters its third-quarter reporting period with a central question for investors: can its upstream business and balance-sheet progress carry cash generation after an unusually strong midstream contribution begins to fade? An analysis by Earnings Whispers on Finviz framed that issue ahead of Occidental's results, scheduled after the market close on Monday, November 9.
Midstream gains face pressure
The midstream business produced record second-quarter earnings near USD 960 million, more than twice the guidance midpoint, after the spread between Waha and the Gulf Coast widened sharply. Management raised full-year midstream guidance twice, first by USD 800 million and then by another USD 300 million.
The same outlook warned that new Permian takeaway capacity could narrow the spread. Around 3 billion cubic feet per day of capacity was expected to enter service, with roughly 2 billion cubic feet per day more targeted for the fourth quarter. A weaker midstream result would therefore test whether the benefit was temporary or part of a more durable earnings improvement.
Upstream operations in focus
Analysts cited by Earnings Whispers expect third-quarter earnings of USD 1.43 per share on revenue of USD 6.73 billion. The estimate would represent a 123 percent increase from USD 0.64 a year earlier, while revenue would be broadly unchanged from USD 6.72 billion. The projected earnings decline from USD 2.40 in the second quarter reflects the expected loss of some midstream support.
Production and operating costs will be important indicators. Domestic operating costs had been guided to USD 8.75 per barrel of oil equivalent for the quarter, up from USD 7.80 in the second quarter, with maintenance and weather cited as factors. The full-year target remained USD 8.10. Production had exceeded the prior-quarter midpoint by 23,000 barrels per day, and another solid volume result would support the case for improving operations.
International production remains a source of uncertainty because of Middle East disruptions and sulfur logistics at Alhosn. Higher gas prices supporting the upstream business could partly offset a weaker midstream contribution, but the report will show whether that offset materialized.
Debt reduction remains central
Occidental's longer-term plan calls for sustainable annual cash flow to rise by USD 4 billion by 2030. The plan includes about USD 900 million in lower sustaining capital and a reduction in the base decline rate from roughly 25 percent to 20 percent. Progress on Stratos commissioning, further debt reduction from a principal level of USD 11.8 billion, and capital spending within the USD 5.5 billion to USD 5.9 billion range would strengthen that strategy.

Occidental is expected to publish its third-quarter figures after the close on November 9, followed by the investor call on November 10. The key signal for the stock will be whether upstream performance, cost control and debt reduction can offset a less favorable midstream environment.
