- Third-quarter net profit missed the analyst forecast as refining earnings weakened.
- Energy and consumer businesses exceeded expectations, while operating cash flow remained strong.
- ORLEN is weighing lower full-year investment spending against major energy and infrastructure projects.
Orlen reported third-quarter net profit of PLN 5.6 billion on Thursday, November 5, below the PLN 7.3 billion analyst forecast, as weaker refining earnings offset stronger power and retail results. Investing.com, citing Reuters, said the company posted revenue of PLN 80.1 billion and LIFO-based core earnings of PLN 14.8 billion.
Refining weighs on quarterly performance
Downstream core earnings reached PLN 6.3 billion, below the PLN 7.4 billion forecast, while refinery crude throughput totaled 10.1 million tonnes. Upstream and Supply generated PLN 4.7 billion, with average hydrocarbon production of 183 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Energy core earnings of PLN 2.7 billion exceeded the PLN 2.2 billion forecast, supported by nearly 30 percent year-on-year growth in renewable power generation. Consumers and Products delivered PLN 1.5 billion against a PLN 1.3 billion forecast, helped by improved profitability in foreign markets.
Investment plan faces lower spending
Operating cash flow reached PLN 12.8 billion, while quarterly investment in growth projects totaled PLN 7.8 billion. After nine months, capital expenditure stood at PLN 22.5 billion, and management indicated that full-year spending could fall below the previously assumed PLN 36 billion.
The company also faces a PLN 2.4 billion windfall tax charge scheduled for the fourth quarter, according to the earnings-call summary published by TradingView. That charge is an important consideration for investors assessing the difference between operating performance and reported earnings.
