Palo Alto Networks faces an active cybersecurity threat after its Unit 42 research team reported on Thursday, October 29, that attackers are exploiting PHP2Shell vulnerabilities against internet-exposed PAN-OS management interfaces. Unit 42 said researchers independently verified the attacker's tooling and confirmed a campaign that combined the PHP flaws with a Linux kernel privilege-escalation vulnerability to gain root access. The Unit 42 threat brief was updated on October 29.
Exposure raises execution pressure
PHP2Shell refers to CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, two remote-code-execution vulnerabilities rated 9.2 on the CVSS 4.0 scale. Unit 42 said the affected Palo Alto Networks surface is concentrated in PAN-OS management interfaces and that the company individually contacted impacted customers.
Unit 42 said roughly 0.02 percent of Palo Alto Networks' global installed base had internet-facing management interfaces configured and were impacted. The company recommends removing public internet access immediately, restricting management access to trusted internal addresses and applying the available PAN-OS fixes. Customers that have applied the patches are not affected because the fixes interrupt the observed exploit chain.

Remediation is the next milestone
For investors, the immediate issue is the speed and completeness of customer remediation rather than the existence of a broad product recall. The company said its security products provide protection and mitigation, but customers should still assess exposure and patch without delay.
Unit 42 said Palo Alto Networks will continue investigating and provide further updates. Completion of customer patching and removal of public exposure from remaining management interfaces are the next operational milestones.
