Saab added a new technology milestone to its fighter portfolio on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. In a Saab press release, the defence group said its in-house artificial intelligence agents had flown on Gripen E and autonomously controlled the aircraft in beyond-visual-range combat scenarios.

The announcement adds a fresh operational technology angle to the Saab stock story after the company's recent naval product launches. It also gives investors a concrete example of Saab's effort to build software capabilities alongside its established aircraft, radar and weapons businesses.

From simulation to flight testing

Saab said its AI agents, training environments and development tools were built internally. The agents are designed to learn, adapt and cooperate with pilots and operators across different mission tasks, either supporting a pilot in the cockpit or working alongside pilots from an uncrewed platform.

The company's AI Fighter Pilot Academy provides the development framework. Saab said the agents accumulate millions of simulated flight hours across operational scenarios, with beyond-visual-range combat now validated under real flight conditions. Gripen E's software-defined architecture allows new AI software to be integrated and tested without a dedicated experimental aircraft, according to the company.

Implications for future platforms

Saab is continuing to expand the agents' capabilities and plans to fly them in a broader range of scenarios. The group said the reusable infrastructure can support new capabilities, scenarios and platforms without rebuilding the development framework.

For investors, the announcement points to a longer-term product opportunity rather than a new order or financial forecast. Saab said sovereign, verified AI could support future networks of crewed and uncrewed systems, while its partnership in the Swedish Sferical AI initiative is intended to provide secure computing capacity.
