Shell reported stronger third-quarter results on October 29, 2026, and raised the pace of shareholder returns. The company's Shell Q3 2026 quarterly press release reported adjusted earnings of $10.814 billion, up from $9.836 billion in the second quarter.
Refining drives quarterly improvement
Chemicals and Products was the main earnings driver. Adjusted earnings in the segment increased to $3.855 billion from $2.9 billion in the previous quarter, while Shell's global indicative refining margin climbed to $42 per barrel from $24. Refinery utilisation was 96%, compared with 102% in the second quarter.
Integrated Gas adjusted earnings reached $3.037 billion, supported by higher gas and liquefied natural gas prices. Upstream contributed $3.189 billion, below the second-quarter result of $3.5 billion as lower liquids prices and higher exploration and well write-offs weighed on the segment. Marketing adjusted earnings also declined to $1.164 billion from $1.3 billion.
Buyback raises capital-return expectations
Shell announced a $5 billion share buyback programme for the next three months. Management said the programme reflects strong operational performance and follows the completion of the previous repurchase programme. The company also maintained its quarterly dividend at $0.3906 per share.
Cash flow from operations was $21.043 billion, compared with $21.432 billion in the second quarter. Cash flow from operations excluding working capital was $21.7 billion. Free cash flow reached $16.3 billion, below the prior quarter's $17.5 billion, while net debt fell to $39.7 billion from $41.8 billion. Shell reported post-ARC acquisition gearing of 16.6%.
Investment and outlook
The quarter included the completion of the ARC Resources acquisition and a final investment decision on LNG Canada Phase 2. Shell kept its 2026 cash capital expenditure outlook at $23 billion to $25 billion, including ARC.
For the fourth quarter, Shell expects upstream production of 1.7 million to 1.9 million barrels of oil equivalent per day. Refinery utilisation is expected to range from 92% to 100%. Shell also said fourth-quarter income is expected to include an estimated non-cash loss of $6.4 billion linked to the derecognition of a Netherlands defined benefit plan, subject to change.
