- Concerns about the profitability of artificial intelligence infrastructure weighed on South Korean semiconductor stocks.
- Foreign investors and institutions were net sellers in the broader Korean technology sector during early trading.
- SK Hynix remains exposed to changing expectations for AI demand, customer spending and chip-sector valuations.
SK Hynix shares came under pressure in South Korea on Tuesday, November 3, as renewed doubts about the profitability of artificial intelligence infrastructure spending spread across technology markets. SBS News reported that the stock traded at 1.393 million Korean won at 9:08 a.m., down 5.37% from the previous session.
The move came after a broad sell-off in US technology stocks revived concerns about the returns generated by large AI infrastructure projects. Oracle's plan to raise 20 billion US dollars through stock and bond offerings to finance AI infrastructure, together with Anthropic's announced future infrastructure spending, added to the market's focus on capital intensity and investment payback.
Investor selling sharpens valuation pressure
Merrill Lynch and JPMorgan were among the leading selling brokerage channels for both SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics, according to SBS. Foreign investors were net sellers of 227.7 billion Korean won on the main Korean exchange, while institutions sold 94.2 billion Korean won. Individual investors moved in the opposite direction, recording net purchases of 309.9 billion Korean won.
The selling was also visible across the KOSPI electrical and electronic sector, which includes SK Hynix. Foreign investors sold a net 217.6 billion Korean won in that sector, while institutions sold 59.5 billion Korean won. Individual investors were net buyers of 266.3 billion Korean won.
AI demand remains the central variable
For SK Hynix, the latest decline highlights the gap between strong operating momentum in memory chips and changing investor expectations for AI spending. The company is closely tied to demand for high-bandwidth memory and other products used in data-center computing, so changes in customers' investment plans can affect both its earnings outlook and the valuation assigned to the stock.
That makes the market reaction relevant even after the company's recent record results and shareholder-return announcements. Investors are weighing whether expanding AI services will support further orders strongly enough to justify the sector's high capital requirements. A slowdown in spending by one major customer could also shift demand expectations across memory suppliers, while broader adoption by cloud providers, enterprises and public-sector projects could support the cycle.
