- SMA Australia presented a grid-forming DC-hybrid solution designed to support grid stability and renewable project economics.
- The system combines power conversion, plant controls and engineering support for large-scale solar and storage projects.
- Investors will focus on whether new technology offerings translate into project orders and stronger profitability.
SMA Australia unveiled a new grid-forming DC-hybrid solution at All Energy Australia in Melbourne on Wednesday, October 28. pv magazine Australia reported that the offering is designed to help renewable projects secure grid connections while supporting system stability.
Technology targets grid constraints
The solution combines power conversion technology, intelligent plant controls and engineering support. Its grid-forming functions include synthetic inertia, fast frequency response and voltage support, capabilities aimed at helping renewable assets respond to demanding network conditions.
SMA said the DC-coupled architecture can capture solar energy that would otherwise be lost through inverter clipping and store it for later dispatch. The company also highlighted silicon carbide semiconductor technology and conversion efficiency of up to 99 percent.
Storage remains a central application
The Australian unit also showcased SMA's Medium Voltage Power Station 6400-10000 range for large-scale renewable projects. The integrated architecture uses redundant inverter technology and is intended to improve plant availability.
SMA Australia's presentation puts the product in a market where developers are weighing connection risk, equipment coordination and long-term returns. For SMA Solar, the commercial test will be whether such integrated offerings support orders and improve the profitability of its project business.
