SoftBank Corp joined five Japanese companies in a government-backed project to build a quantum-computing-based materials development platform. The consortium announced the initiative on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, after its proposal was selected by Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO. The details were published in SoftBank's press release.

Platform links quantum computing and AI

The six partners are TOPPAN Holdings, AISIN, Asahi Kasei, SoftBank, AGC and DIC. Their joint agreement covers fiscal 2026 through fiscal 2028, with fiscal 2026 ending on March 31, 2027.

The project aims to combine quantum-computing calculations with machine learning and other artificial intelligence technologies. The partners intend to address limits in conventional materials research, including the need for high-quality training data and the rising computational cost of more precise, larger-scale simulations.

The research will cover materials for next-generation batteries, optical materials for displays and sensors, and superconducting materials for future devices. The companies will compare simulation results with laboratory measurements and use the feedback to improve the platform's predictive accuracy.

SoftBank supplies computing infrastructure

SoftBank's role is to operate a platform connecting quantum computers with supercomputers. The company will generate data for materials research, develop AI-based methods for using that data and demonstrate optimization across several industrial fields, including energy-related materials such as next-generation batteries.

The announcement expands SoftBank's technology focus beyond connectivity into quantum computing and industrial research infrastructure. The commercial contribution remains tied to the project's future practical use, while the research itself is planned to continue through fiscal 2028.
