- Middle East disruption and weak soda ash demand pressured third-quarter profitability.
- The Viridis agreement is intended to secure rare-earth feedstock for La Rochelle from 2028.
- Solvay maintained its revised 2026 EBITDA and free-cash-flow outlook.
Solvay reported weaker third-quarter results on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, as the conflict in the Middle East disrupted operations and soda ash markets remained soft. The company's regulated press release, published through Solvay's investor release, also highlighted progress in rare-earth materials.
Solvay generated underlying sales of EUR 1.031 billion in the quarter, down 3.3% organically from a year earlier. Underlying EBITDA fell 26.6% organically to EUR 173 million, reducing the margin to 16.8% from 22.2%. Underlying net profit from continuing operations declined to EUR 35 million from EUR 90 million.
Middle East disruption weighs on earnings
Solvay said the conflict reduced third-quarter underlying EBITDA by EUR 25 million. The temporary suspension of its Peroxides plant at the Sadara complex in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, accounted for close to EUR 15 million of that impact, while higher energy and logistics costs added further pressure.
The company is exploring ways to mitigate the shutdown's financial effect through mechanisms in the joint-venture framework. Management said operations are ready to restart, but the timing depends on local partners and customers. The current outlook excludes any potential revenue or recovery measures from Sadara for the remainder of 2026.
Rare-earth supply strengthens positioning
Solvay signed a long-term supply agreement with Viridis Mining and Minerals to secure rare-earth feedstock from Brazil beginning in 2028. The material is intended for Solvay's separation facility in La Rochelle, France, and supports a more integrated supply chain for rare-earth products used in permanent magnets and other advanced applications.
Solvay also continues discussions with OneIM about a possible joint venture involving its rare-earth activities. The company said those discussions remain ongoing, while the Viridis agreement provides a separate step toward securing future supply and expanding the La Rochelle platform.
Outlook remains under pressure
Solvay kept its revised 2026 outlook. It expects underlying EBITDA of EUR 720 million to EUR 740 million and free cash flow to Solvay shareholders from continuing operations of EUR 120 million to EUR 150 million, net of roughly EUR 90 million in transformation expenses. Capital expenditure is expected to remain below EUR 300 million.
Structural cost savings reached EUR 283 million since the program began, with the company still targeting EUR 300 million by the end of 2026. The Board also approved an interim gross dividend of EUR 0.97 per share, payable on January 20, 2027.
Solvay stock traded at 24.65 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 12:09 CET on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Investors will next focus on the group's fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results scheduled for March 4, 2027.
