Sony Group is highlighting advances in artificial-intelligence sound separation as the company expands the technology across entertainment and consumer products. In a Sony Group blog post published Monday, November 2, 2026, the company described applications ranging from film restoration to headphones and spatial audio.

Sony says its proprietary technology can remove noise, isolate vocals or extract individual instruments from mixed audio. The group began applying deep learning to sound separation in 2013 and has continued to improve the neural networks used to recognize frequency patterns and changes over time.

Technology moves across Sony's businesses

The company says the technology helped create 4K UHD versions of Lawrence of Arabia and Gandhi by separating dialogue and sound effects from older single-track masters. Sony also cites its use in a 4K remaster of Mamoru Oshii's Angel's Egg, which premiered in the Cannes Classics section in May 2025 before a theatrical release six months later.

In consumer products, sound separation forms part of Sony's AI beamforming technology for headphones. The system is designed to isolate a user's voice during calls in noisy surroundings. Sony also says the technology can help selected soundbars turn stereo recordings into three-dimensional spatial audio.

The company is also pushing beyond predefined audio categories. Sony says a newer model can use information from a music score, such as a melody or tone, as a cue for extracting a specific element from complex analog-synthesizer music. The system was trained with a large simulated dataset of analog-synthesizer tones.

That work supported sound artist evala's Holy Echo installation at Ars Electronica Festival 2026 in Austria. Sony's technology was used to extract samples from Isao Tomita's 1974 analog-synthesizer arrangement of Claude Debussy's Clair de Lune for the performance installation.

Sony researchers Yuki Mitsufuji and Shusuke Takahashi received the 26th Yamazaki-Teiichi Prize for the group's work in sound separation. The award gives the research a further link to practical applications, although the blog post does not quantify the technology's financial contribution.
