Southern Company reported stronger third-quarter results on Thursday, November 5, 2026, as warmer weather, higher customer usage and growing demand from large commercial and industrial customers supported earnings. The company disclosed the results in a PR Newswire release.
Profit and revenue accelerate
Reported third-quarter net income rose to 2.046 billion US dollars from 1.711 billion US dollars a year earlier. Earnings per share increased to 1.77 US dollars from 1.55 US dollars.
Excluding selected items, net income reached 2.242 billion US dollars, compared with 1.766 billion US dollars in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted earnings per share rose to 1.94 US dollars from 1.60 US dollars.
Operating revenue increased to 8.843 billion US dollars from 7.823 billion US dollars. The company attributed the adjusted earnings improvement to warmer weather, increased usage, customer growth, higher revenue from large commercial and industrial customers and stronger earnings at Southern Power.
Growth comes with investment needs
Higher non-fuel operating expenses, taxes other than income taxes and dilution from additional shares partly offset the gains. Southern Company also recorded charges related to wind-facility repowering, debt extinguishment and estimated losses tied to Nicor Gas capital investments.
Chief Executive Chris Womack said the Southeast is growing at an unprecedented and transformational pace and that Southern Company is positioned to serve the increased demand. The release also highlighted risks involving future electricity demand, new generation and transmission investment, capital access and revenue recovery.
