Record quarter supports shareholder returns
For the third quarter ended September 30, Southern Copper reported sales of 4,696.6 million US dollars, up 39.1 percent from 3,377.3 million US dollars a year earlier. The company attributed the increase mainly to higher metal prices across its product portfolio, with a modest 0.8 percent increase in zinc sales volumes partly offsetting lower copper, molybdenum and silver volumes.
Net income attributable to Southern Copper reached a quarterly record of 1,801.8 million US dollars, compared with 1,107.6 million US dollars in the third quarter of 2025. Adjusted EBITDA rose 53.9 percent to 3,040.2 million US dollars, and the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 64.7 percent from 58.5 percent.
Operating cash flow also strengthened. Cash generated from operations increased 42.6 percent year over year to 2,224.3 million US dollars in the quarter. For the first nine months, operating cash flow reached 5,907.3 million US dollars, up 81.3 percent from the comparable period.
Two projects shape future output
The company's operating progress was mixed beneath the strong financial figures. Mined copper production fell 1.1 percent year over year to 232,396 tonnes in the third quarter, mainly because of lower grades at Peruvian operations. Refined copper production increased 16.1 percent to 209,446 tonnes, while zinc and molybdenum mining volumes declined.
Chairman German Larrea said Tia Maria was half complete in October and remained on track to begin operations in the first half of 2028. The project is expected to produce 120,000 tonnes of copper a year in its early years. Southern Copper also began early site work at El Pilar in September; the Mexican project carries an estimated capital budget of 551 million US dollars and is expected to start production in the second half of 2029.
The two projects are intended to add about 156,000 tonnes of refined copper to annual production. Management said the additional output would help the company move beyond one million tonnes of annual production, although the projects still require substantial capital spending and execution.
Payment date remains the next event
Shareholders of record at the close of business on November 3 are scheduled to receive the distribution on November 19. It consists of a quarterly cash dividend of 1.30 US dollars per common share and 0.0106 common shares per common share. Cash will replace fractional shares, calculated using a 197.83 US dollar reference share price based on the October 15 average of the high and low prices.
For investors, the payment is a near-term shareholder-return event rather than a new operating forecast. The stronger quarter improves current cash-generation metrics, while lower mined copper volumes and the timing of Tia Maria and El Pilar remain important variables for the longer-term production outlook.
