- Stellantis will keep its Mirafiori Fiat 500 plant idle through November 13.
- The company links the latest stoppage to shortages of engine-control-unit chips.
- Weak demand remains a separate concern for the Fiat 500 recovery.
Stellantis will extend the production stoppage at its Fiat 500 plant in Turin through November 13, adding a fourth consecutive week without output at the Mirafiori factory. Reuters reported the decision on Thursday, November 5, citing the automaker and the FIOM trade union.
What has changed since our last report
The extension turns a temporary halt into a longer disruption for one of Stellantis' key Italian facilities. The first two weeks of the stoppage, which began in mid-October, were attributed by a company spokesperson to weak demand. Stellantis links the latest two weeks to a shortage of electronic components used in engine control units.
The component shortage also affects production of the Fiat Pandina. Stellantis previously warned that supply constraints could cause further interruptions in November and December at Mirafiori and at Pomigliano, where the Pandina is built. The Termoli plant, which assembles the N3 GSE engine used by both models, could also face knock-on effects.
Turnaround faces a tougher test
For investors, the confirmed extension raises the execution burden for Stellantis' turnaround. The company is seeking alternative supplies, while the combination of component shortages and weak Fiat 500 demand threatens vehicle availability and factory utilization in Italy. The duration of the disruption is now the key operational variable.
