Suncor Energy reported record cash generation for the third quarter on November 3, 2026, while announcing higher shareholder distributions and an agreement to sell non-core offshore interests. The release was carried by BOE Report, citing the company release distributed through TMX Newsfile.

Suncor generated C$6.705 billion in adjusted funds from operations in the three months ended September 30, up from C$3.831 billion a year earlier. Free funds flow reached C$5.196 billion, compared with C$2.347 billion in the prior-year quarter. Both are non-GAAP measures that management uses to assess operating performance and cash available for investment, debt reduction and distributions.

Profit and operations strengthen

Net earnings rose to C$3.814 billion, or C$3.27 per common share, from C$1.619 billion, or C$1.34 per share. Adjusted operating earnings increased to C$4.631 billion from C$1.794 billion. The reported result included a C$1.080 billion non-cash impairment in the exploration and production segment related to the planned offshore divestiture.

Operating cash flow climbed to C$6.196 billion from C$3.785 billion. Upstream production was 852,500 barrels per day, while refinery crude throughput reached 487,700 barrels per day. Refined product sales set a third-quarter record at 676,900 barrels per day, compared with 646,800 barrels per day in the same period of 2025.

Chief Executive Officer Rich Kruger said the quarter benefited from the integration of Suncor's operations and the ability to maintain Edmonton refinery throughput during a turnaround. The company said higher upstream price realizations, stronger downstream margins and increased high-value export sales supported adjusted operating earnings, partly offset by higher royalties and taxes.

Returns rise after quarter-end

Suncor returned C$2.048 billion to shareholders during the quarter, including nearly C$1.4 billion of repurchases and nearly C$700 million in dividends. Beginning in October, planned monthly repurchases rose 50 percent to C$750 million from C$500 million. Suncor projects C$5.5 billion of repurchases for 2026.

After the quarter, the board approved a quarterly dividend of C$0.66 per share, 10 percent above the previous C$0.60 payment. Net debt stood at C$1.751 billion at September 30, down from C$7.147 billion a year earlier, giving the payout program greater balance-sheet support while leaving capital spending and commodity prices as key variables for investors.

Offshore sale changes the portfolio

Suncor agreed to sell its 48 percent interest in Terra Nova, 40 percent interest in White Rose and 38.6 percent interest in West White Rose for C$1.2 billion, plus up to C$350 million in contingent consideration linked to future oil prices. The transaction has an effective date of July 1, 2026, and is expected to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, partner consents and other closing conditions.

The buyer is to assume future investment commitments and liabilities connected with the assets, including a C$500 million regulatory well-compliance program at Terra Nova beginning in 2027 and estimated future abandonment and lease liabilities with a present value of C$1.4 billion. The assets produced 17,000 barrels per day during the first nine months of 2026. Suncor said there were no changes to its previously updated 2026 corporate guidance ranges.
