- Romania selected Thales for deployable systems designed to support aircraft surveillance and landing operations.
- The equipment is intended to improve airbase flexibility and connectivity with Romanian and NATO command networks.
- Thales is also expanding its Romanian industrial footprint through installation, integration and long-term support.
Romania has selected Thales for a contract covering four mobile radar systems for its air force, adding a new defense order to the French group's activity in Eastern Europe. The Ministry of National Defence signed the agreement on Tuesday, October 27, with a consortium formed by Thales Romania and Thales LAS France, according to The Defense Post.
The contract is valued at about 326.5 million Romanian lei excluding VAT. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2028 and will proceed in phases, with the systems deployed at four Romanian air force locations. The mobile configuration is intended to let the country operate the equipment from alternative sites rather than rely solely on fixed airbase infrastructure.
Mobile Systems Target Airbase Resilience
The package includes Thales' STAR NG primary surveillance radar, the RSM NG identification system and Precision Approach Radar systems. Together, the equipment is designed to help controllers track aircraft and guide them during approach and landing, including in poor weather or when fixed infrastructure is unavailable.
The systems will support both military and civilian aircraft operations. Their data can be transmitted in real time to Romanian and NATO command-and-control networks, linking the contract to the wider requirement for interoperable airspace management on NATO's eastern flank.
Thales said the deployable architecture should improve the resilience and flexibility of Romania's airspace operations. Lionel de Castellane, the company's vice president for air traffic and coastal radars, said the selection would support Romania's airspace and its interoperability with NATO. The company also plans to work with local partners on installation, integration and long-term support.
Romania Builds a Broader Radar Program
The agreement follows a separate Romanian order for 12 Thales GM200 Multi-Mission All-in-One radars secured in July under a government-to-government arrangement between Romania and France. The Defense Post reported that the program is funded through the European Union's SAFE initiative and that the first deliveries are expected in 2027. Thales is also due to establish a Radar Competence Centre in Romania.
For Thales, the latest contract reinforces the defense business's exposure to air surveillance, military air traffic control and NATO-related modernization. The order should be viewed as a medium-term program contribution rather than an immediate revenue event because deliveries begin in 2028 and are phased. The public announcement also leaves the individual Romanian deployment sites unspecified.
The real-time quote of Thales stock was 235.40 euros on Lang & Schwarz at 11:05 CET on Friday, October 30, 2026.
