Expansion raises execution demands
For the fourth quarter, management expects wafer shipments to increase by a low-single-digit percentage, firm US-dollar average selling prices, a gross margin comparable with the third quarter and utilization in the low-90 percent range. Quarterly capacity is expected to rise from 1.325 million to 1.337 million 12-inch-equivalent wafers.
UMC's board approved an additional capital-expenditure budget of approximately US$3.2 billion on October 28. The spending is intended to accelerate expansion in Singapore and Tainan, while the 2026 cash-based capital-expenditure budget remains US$2.0 billion. For investors, the next test is whether stronger demand and utilization can offset the financial and execution demands of the expansion.
