- Domestic intermodal volume and revenue reached a fifth consecutive record quarter.
- Union Pacific's intermodal service index held at 92% as volumes increased.
- Regulatory opposition remains a consideration for the proposed Norfolk Southern merger.
North American intermodal demand gave Union Pacific a fresh operating tailwind in the three months to October, according to The Loadstar in an analysis published Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The report said domestic intermodal activity reached a fifth consecutive record quarter in both volume and revenue.
Union Pacific generated USD 1.52 billion in intermodal revenue, up 27% year over year, while volumes rose 11% to 956,000 carloads, The Loadstar reported. International intermodal volumes increased 8%, supported by West Coast import traffic and new business, while automotive gains in new business offset continued market softness.
Service execution holds under pressure
Management said the intermodal service-performance index finished the quarter at 92% even as volumes climbed. The railroad responded by deploying buffer resources and clearing containers, a detail that gives investors a more specific measure of execution than the revenue growth alone.
The broader freight backdrop also remains linked to tighter trucking capacity. That shift can support rail demand, but the benefit depends on Union Pacific converting additional traffic without compromising service reliability or pricing discipline.
Merger review remains an investor risk
The Loadstar also reported that Canadian Pacific Kansas City urged the US Surface Transportation Board on October 30 to terminate its review of Union Pacific's proposed Norfolk Southern acquisition. The intervention adds a regulatory and competitive dimension to the operating momentum, although it does not change the company's current earnings outlook by itself.
