Valley National Bancorp reported stronger profitability for the third quarter ended September 30, 2026, with net income rising to USD 206.3 million from USD 170.9 million in the second quarter and USD 163.4 million a year earlier. The company released the results on October 22, according to the Nasdaq release.

Margins and deposits strengthen

Net interest income on a tax-equivalent basis increased to USD 506.8 million, while the net interest margin reached 3.28 percent. Deposits grew by USD 1.1 billion from June 30 to USD 55.2 billion at the end of September, supported mainly by commercial customer inflows and retail certificates of deposit.

Total loans rose by USD 722.7 million to USD 53.2 billion, equivalent to 5.5 percent on an annualized basis. Commercial and industrial lending and commercial real estate loans were the main contributors to the increase. The commercial real estate concentration ratio declined to approximately 312 percent from 317 percent in the prior quarter.

Credit metrics remain important

Valley reported a 49.38 percent efficiency ratio, improving from 52.11 percent in the second quarter. Annualized return on average tangible common equity reached 14.24 percent, moving closer to management's goal of at least 15 percent by the end of 2027.

Credit costs also require attention. Net loan charge-offs increased to USD 37.1 million from USD 22.0 million in the second quarter, while non-accrual loans rose to USD 511.4 million, or 0.96 percent of total loans. Management said the allowance for credit losses represented 1.13 percent of total loans at September 30.

Acquisitions set the next milestone

Valley expects its acquisitions of Providence Financial Corporation and Bluevine to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions. Providence would expand the bank's commercial presence in the Chicago area, while Bluevine would add a digital small-business platform and nationwide deposit relationships.
