Volkswagen faces a costly turnaround

  • Volkswagen posted its deepest quarterly loss in more than a decade after heavy one-off charges.
  • Weak Chinese demand, tariffs and lower electric-vehicle margins are weighing on the business.
  • Management is pursuing major cost cuts while labor tensions remain a key execution risk.

Volkswagen's third-quarter results have put the group's restructuring at the center of the investment case. In a report dated October 29, Reuters said the automaker posted an operating loss of EUR 5.9 billion for the three months to September.

The result was hit by about EUR 8 billion in one-off items, largely linked to a writedown of Volkswagen's stake in Porsche. Quarterly revenue fell 6% to EUR 75.3 billion. The charges should be separated from the underlying operating challenge, but they underline the pressure on management to restore profitability.

China and costs drive the reset

Volkswagen is facing fierce competition in China, tariff costs and heavy investment needs as the industry shifts toward electric vehicles. Reuters reported that CEO Oliver Blume plans to cut 100,000 jobs across the group, while up to four German plants face closure under the restructuring plan.

Finance chief Arno Antlitz said the company must act quickly and decisively. Volkswagen is targeting an operating profit margin of 8% to 10% by 2030, while its operating return on sales stood at 3.8% in the first nine months before the one-off items.
