- The index was 2.92% below the 175,710.05-point level cited in the previous Bovespa report.
- Fiscal uncertainty, weaker US markets and the pending Vale earnings release weighed on sentiment.
The Ibovespa remained lower in Thursday trading, with the benchmark at 170,580.38 points at 14:05 BRT on October 29, according to The Rio Times. The index was down 0.25% from Wednesday's close of 171,006.10 points and 2.92% below the 175,710.05-point level cited in the previous Bovespa report.
Fiscal concerns limit recovery
The intraday weakness came despite a 2.4% rise in iron ore prices in Dalian, China. UOL Economia reported that caution over Brazil's fiscal outlook and declines in US equity markets were keeping the index from extending a recovery. The report also cited investor uncertainty about the economic team and policy direction of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's re-elected government.
Vale results remain in focus
Vale was scheduled to release its third-quarter results after the B3 close. The Rio Times identified the report as the main corporate catalyst for the materials-heavy index, while UOL Economia said market estimates pointed to lower year-on-year net income and EBITDA. The immediate market reaction was therefore expected in Friday trading rather than during Thursday's cash session.
At the time of the afternoon reading, the market remained focused on whether domestic policy signals could stabilise Brazilian assets after the sharp losses earlier in the week. The session was still in progress, so the quoted level was an intraday reading rather than a closing value.
