- The BSE Sensex closed at 74,459.53 on Friday, October 30, 2026, gaining 308.49 points or 0.42 percent.
- Information technology, pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks supported the benchmark, while midcaps and smallcaps declined.
- Higher crude oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty and weak global technology cues limited the broader recovery.
- Indian equities will remain closed over the weekend, with the next regular session scheduled for Monday, November 2.
The BSE Sensex extended its recovery for a second consecutive session on Friday, October 30, 2026. According to India Today, the index closed at 74,459.53, up 308.49 points or 0.42 percent from the previous session. The move followed Thursday's 905.01-point recovery, but the latest advance was considerably narrower.
IT and defensive sectors lead
Buying in large-cap information technology shares provided the main support. India Today reported that the Nifty IT index gained 2.32 percent, with Infosys rising 3.37 percent, while pharmaceutical and healthcare stocks also attracted demand. Trent and InterGlobe Aviation advanced after quarterly results, adding to gains among selected heavyweight constituents.
The recovery was not broad-based. The Nifty Midcap 50 fell 0.86 percent, the Nifty Midcap 100 declined 0.93 percent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 dropped 1.85 percent, according to the same report. This divergence indicates that the benchmark's advance was driven by a limited group of large companies rather than a broad improvement in risk appetite.
Oil remains a key market risk
Elevated energy prices continued to constrain sentiment. India Today reported that Brent crude rose 2.18 percent to 117.38 United States dollars per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 1.99 percent to 104.03 United States dollars. For India, sustained oil strength can increase import costs and add pressure to inflation and the rupee.
HDFC Sky also described a weak broader market, citing a 0.8 percent decline in the Nifty Midcap index and a 1.8 percent fall in the Nifty Smallcap index. Its report said resilient corporate earnings and stable domestic demand helped the frontline indices, while crude prices and geopolitical uncertainty remained important risks.
Weekend pause before next session
Indian equity markets will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, with regular trading scheduled to resume on Monday, November 2. Investors will likely continue to assess quarterly earnings, institutional flows, crude oil and global technology sentiment. The Friday advance improved the headline trend, but the narrow participation argues for a measured reading of the recovery rather than treating it as a broad-based breakout.
