- Dow Jones ended October 13 at 51,671 points, down 180 points or 0.3 percent.
- Bank earnings and chip selling pressured stocks as JPMorgan missed profit estimates.
- Johnson & Johnson fell 6.1 percent after weaker medical-device sales.
- September CPI is due October 14 at 8:30 a.m. ET, with a 0.6 percent forecast.
The Dow Jones lost 180 points, or 0.3 percent, to 51,671 points on October 13. Bank earnings and renewed semiconductor selling pressured the index as investors prepared for Wednesday's inflation data, Yahoo Finance reported.
Johnson & Johnson was among the weakest Dow Jones components, falling 6.1 percent. The decline followed weaker-than-expected medical-device sales despite an earnings beat and higher full-year guidance, IndMoney showed. Goldman Sachs gained 0.4 percent, while UnitedHealth Group rose 0.2 percent in the same market data.
Why did the Dow Jones fall on Tuesday?
JPMorgan Chase reported third-quarter earnings of USD 5.57 per share, below the USD 5.93 FactSet consensus. Revenue also missed estimates at USD 50.17 billion against USD 51.23 billion, Morningstar reported.
Goldman Sachs provided a counterweight after quarterly profit rose 29 percent from a year earlier. UnitedHealth also raised its 2026 profit forecast, while chip stocks weakened amid renewed concern about competition in memory technology, CNBC said.
Dow Jones ends lower as earnings split the market
The Dow Jones opened at 52,093 points, up 242 points or 0.5 percent, before giving back those gains. The final level was recorded at 4:03 p.m. ET, shortly after the regular close, WTOP reported.
The market split reflected competing earnings signals. Financial results supported selected banks, while semiconductor weakness weighed on broader risk appetite. The Dow's decline was smaller than the technology-heavy market's losses.
