- The Hang Seng Index closed at 23,294.42 points on October 30, gaining 1.46 percent.
- Financial, consumer, energy and shipping shares supported the rebound, while AI hardware remained under pressure.
- The index still fell 5.36 percent in October, according to Dow Jones Market Data.
The Hang Seng Index ended the final Hong Kong trading session of October at 23,294.42 points on Friday, October 30. According to Dow Jones Market Data, reported by Morningstar, the index gained 335.77 points, or 1.46 percent, on the day. It was the gauge's strongest one-day advance since October 9, 2026.
Broad gains offset technology pressure
The rebound was broad but uneven. RTHK reported that financial stocks led gains, rising 1.3 percent, while mainland property developers advanced 2.8 percent. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose 1.4 percent to 7,862 points. The Hang Seng Tech Index added 0.3 percent to 3,754 points, although it remained near a two-year low.
Consumer, energy and shipping shares also supported the benchmark. Futu's market report, citing Zhitong Finance, said Mengniu Dairy rose 9.42 percent, while Sinopec gained 10.31 percent and COSCO Shipping Holdings advanced 7.70 percent. The report also identified gains in consumer names and weakness in gold-related shares.
AI investment remains a market concern
Technology sentiment remained fragile after a selloff in United States technology stocks renewed doubts about the returns from elevated artificial-intelligence spending. RTHK said AI-related shares led declines as investors focused on the cash demands of companies including Alphabet, Amazon and Intel. Futu reported continuing weakness in semiconductor and computing-hardware shares, including declines for HuaHong and SMIC.
UBS China internet research head Kenneth Fong, quoted by RTHK, said some stocks were treating the peak in AI spending as a lasting earnings burden while assigning limited value to possible future AI monetisation. That assessment helps explain why the Hang Seng's advance did not prevent technology shares from lagging parts of the wider market.
Monthly decline remains substantial
Despite Friday's gain, the Hang Seng Index fell 5.36 percent in October, according to Dow Jones Market Data. It also remained down 10.08 percent from a year earlier and 9.11 percent year to date. The index's Friday close was 2.75 percent above its 2026 closing low, but still 16.71 percent below its 2026 closing high.
