- The Hang Seng Index closed 0.57% higher at 23,525.97 points on November 3, according to Xinhua.
- Technology and consumer stocks supported the market, while AI hardware shares weakened sharply.
- Investors also weighed falling oil prices, US midterm elections and concerns about AI spending.
The Hang Seng Index ended the November 3 session at 23,525.97 points, up 0.57%. The close extended the benchmark's advance to a third trading day, according to Xinhua. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index gained 0.47%, while the Hang Seng Tech Index rose 0.74%.
Consumer Shares Offset AI Hardware Weakness
Market performance was uneven beneath the headline gain. MarketWatch reported that Haidilao was the strongest riser among Hang Seng constituents, gaining 6.43%, while Trip.com and JD.com added 6.34% and 5.61%, respectively. Lenovo was the largest decliner, falling 6.11%, followed by Hua Hong Grace Semiconductor and BeOne Medicines.
A detailed market wrap by Futu said large technology and consumer shares provided support, while optical communications and other AI hardware stocks came under pressure. Zhongji Xuchuang fell 10.92% and Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable declined 6.25%, illustrating the sharp divergence between demand-sensitive consumer names and parts of the AI supply chain.
Global Risk Factors Remain in Focus
Investors were also assessing the US midterm elections and the outlook for technology investment. AFP reported that markets remained nervous about debt-funded spending by major AI companies, while renewed hopes of progress in US-Iran discussions pushed oil prices lower. Those factors formed a mixed backdrop for Asian equities: lower energy costs offered some relief, but technology valuation and capital-spending concerns continued to weigh on parts of the regional market.
For investors, the session points to a continued split within Hong Kong equities rather than a broad-based technology rally. The benchmark moved higher, but the weakness in AI hardware and semiconductor-linked names shows that sector selection remained important. Further direction may depend on the interpretation of US election results, global technology spending plans and incoming Chinese economic data.
