The IBEX 35 closed Tuesday's session 0.79% lower at 18,807.2 points, according to Europa Press. The Spanish benchmark lost 150.6 points after rising 1.63% on Monday and finished just above the 18,800-point level.
Election and geopolitical focus
Market attention remained on the US midterm elections and their potential implications for fiscal policy, trade and the dollar. Investors also followed developments involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, while uncertainty around the technology sector remained part of the broader risk backdrop.
Oil prices changed direction during the session. Brent crude stood at 103.35 US dollars per barrel at the close of the European session, down 1.36%, while West Texas Intermediate was at 95.85 US dollars, down 0.63%, according to the same report. The move followed a volatile session in which the market assessed geopolitical headlines and possible diplomatic developments in the Middle East.
Mixed performance among major stocks
Within the IBEX 35, Grifols gained 2.09%, Solaria rose 1.80% and ACS added 1.26%. Repsol and Acciona also finished higher, gaining 1.13% and 1.06%, respectively. On the downside, ArcelorMittal fell 2.45%, Inditex declined 2.40% and Bankinter lost 2.40%. Mapfre, Indra and Acerinox also ended lower.
The session was part of a broader European retreat. London fell 1.14%, Paris declined 0.34% and Frankfurt lost 0.45%, while Milan slipped 0.01%. In Spain's fixed-income market, the 10-year government bond yield reached 3.93%, compared with 3.891% at Monday's close.
Market context for investors
The closing move leaves the IBEX 35 below the 19,000-point threshold after Monday's sharp rebound. The session's combination of election uncertainty, geopolitical headlines, oil-price swings and continued weakness in several technology-related shares points to a market still sensitive to changes in the macroeconomic and political backdrop.
